When you lie on your back the tissues at the back of the throat and the base of the tongue collapse back into the airway, partially or fully blocking your airway and hence oxygen to your brain and body. This is called an Apnoea. You have to wake up to start breathing again, hence disrupting your sleep. This can occur many times an hour resulting in you feeling exhausted in the morning.
An oral appliance works by holding the mandible, i.e. the lower jaw forward which opens the airway. The back of the tongue and palate are also moved forward so they do not block or obstruct the airway. These blockages can cause snoring, improper breathing and poor oxygenation of your brain and hence by using an oral appliance you are able to get better sleep and wake up refreshed.
Custom made oral appliances fitted by the experts at Quality Sleep Clinic allows optimal positioning of the jaw which overcomes snoring and sleep apnoea.
